Legacy of Science Integrity
On the "Home" and "About Us" pages of scienceintegrity.net was stated the following:
Science Integrity was founded in 2009 as a low-profit business. Materials are distributed at costs when an organization paying the costs agrees to distribute the purchased materials without profit for educational purposes. For example, Tax deductible donations may be made at IDEA Centerspecifying "PN&NP books"to make the scientists' version (ISBN 1-4392-2862-0) available to students The non-scientist version of PN&NP and PoL are availableby the case (60 or 80 books) to organizations (schools, PTAs, churches, civic organizations, etc.) agreeing to not make a profit when distributing the books.
On the PN&NP-Lite page was stated:
Case lots (80 books) may be available for very low costs when distributed without profit. Delivery time may be considerably longer as such orders are consolidated for a large print run. Schools, churches, civic groups, PTAs, and other educational organizations may be able to accept tax-deductible contributions to cover the costs for distributing the books without profit. Email don@scienceintegrity.net for details, including less-than full case prices.
On the "Programming of Life" book and DVD pages was stated:
To order multiple copies of the book, and a DVD for non-profit educational use (such as a class), email don@scienceintegrity.net with details of the proposed use, statement that materials will not be sold (cost reimbursement is acceptable), and number of book copies needed. The reply will detail payment details. These royalty-free materials reimburse for costs, with the lowest costs
being a full case (under $2/book, including media mail shipping to a US address).
At conferences, books and DVDs were given totally free to attendees to get the educational information into the hands and minds needing it. Offers for totally free books and DVDs were mailed to every college/university, most high school, and many public library librarians, Totally free PoL book/DVD combos were made available to every member of the US Congress and many other politicians and civic leaders. In my 4/15/11 letter accompanying a PoL book sent to each of the 43 members of Congress I stated:
I plan to make similar packets available to all the other legislators. My preference would be to bring books on my way through DC about June 3, giving them to those who have access (e.g. – you) to distribute the book packets to others. If you’d like to set up a presentation on this important subject (with Q&A), I certainly am willing to do that, also. If nobody offers to help, I’ll probably end up mailing the items first class, as I did to you. Since my goal is to expose unsubstantiated claims in science, the over $1100 in mailing costs would impact other avenues of education. Science Integrity is a low-profit enterprise (under $10 for each of the past two years), since incomes from royalties, consulting, and speaking engagements are used to spread the truth about pseudo-scientific claims. For examples, free books are being sent to libraries (every high school librarian in states represented by about half of the Prayer Caucus received an invitation postcard to request a free copy of PoL) . Thousands of free books have been distributed, so far.
Despite the fact that I received funds designated to purchase books to give away (one contributing organization supported my educational goals by providing over $20,000 to purchase books to give away plus other funds for supporting uncompensated presentations), I found myself in the awkward position of being forced to use such funds for other purposes. As a result of moving from where Science Integrity was a registered business, Science Integrity ceased operation as a business on May 31, 2012, and stopped selling or giving away books or DVDs. Recent events may result in a resumption of the previous activities, but in the meantime, Science Integrity will continue as an educational entity. I plan to start a blog on the scienceintegrity.org site. I will also be doing presentations as before, but not as a business. Whereas previously any hororarium paid was used to buy and/or distribute books, that is not an option at this time, so only expense reimbursement will be expected (or accepted).
Sorry for any disruption caused by these events. If any organization would like to step in to carry out the free distribution previously done by Science Integrity, email don@scienceintegrity.org to discuss the matter.
